Laser marking leather what you should know

How It Works

  1. Laser Machine: A laser marking machine uses high-speed galvanometer mirrors to direct the laser beam, enabling precise and rapid marking.
  2. Software Design: Create or import your designs into software like EZCAD or LightBurn, both of which are commonly used with laser marking machines.
  3. Material Placement: Place and secure the leather on the machine’s workbed. The compact area of galvo systems is ideal for smaller pieces.
  4. Marking Process: The laser marks the leather surface by vaporizing a thin layer, leaving behind an etched design.
  5. Finishing: Clean the surface to remove debris, and condition the leather to maintain its quality.

Types of Leather Suitable for Laser Marking

  • Vegetable-Tanned Leather: Offers clean and detailed engravings, making it the best choice.
  • Genuine Leather: Produces good results but can emit strong fumes.
  • Faux Leather (PU): Can be engraved but may emit harmful fumes or melt, so proceed cautiously.
  • Chrome-Tanned Leather: Not recommended due to the risk of releasing toxic fumes.

Tips for Beginners

  1. Start with Simple Designs: Test small and straightforward designs to get a feel for the machine’s capabilities.
  2. Test Settings on Scraps: Experiment with power, speed, and frequency settings on scrap leather to optimize results.
  3. Adjust Machine Settings:
    • Power: Start with low power to avoid burning.
    • Speed: Galvo machines excel with higher speeds (e.g., 500–1000 mm/s).
    • Frequency: Fine-tune for the leather type (start around 20–50 Hz).
  4. Use Ventilation: Leather emits strong fumes when marked. Ensure proper airflow or use a fume extractor.
  5. Keep Leather Flat: Secure the material to prevent distortion during marking.

Creative Applications

  • Personalized Items: Wallets, belts, phone cases, and luggage tags with initials or logos.
  • Decorative Art: Intricate patterns or calligraphy on leather panels.
  • Corporate Branding: Logos and branding on leather portfolios or promotional items.
  • Fashion and Accessories: Engrave designs on handbags, shoes, or leather clothing.
